A growing number of consumers are turning to online video gaming to get their hands on new movies and television shows.
But are the online video game players who are buying and playing games on Amazon.com (AMZN) the same people who are watching Netflix?
The answer is a bit of both, says Michael Pachter, senior director of consumer technology and research at Pachters Marketing Group.
Pachter says the Amazon.
“We have a lot of people who have not watched any online video, and so they’re not buying any new content.”
Pachters said many of the people who would be buying video games online are watching shows on Netflix.
That’s not surprising given that Netflix is in the same league as Amazon.
Netflix is a subscription service, meaning you pay for a monthly subscription fee.
Pachers said he doesn’t see a significant difference in how people are spending their money.
Purchasing online video isn’t as common as buying traditional movie or TV shows.
But some of the more popular online video-games on the market have some sort of subscription option, such as Netflix, said Pachting.
Patch.TV has an ad-supported version of its popular game PATCH, which is a free, subscription-based version of PATCH 2.3, a massively multiplayer online game that lets players compete against each other in real-time.
The ad-free version of the game, which costs $7.99 a month, doesn’t require an Internet connection.
But there are many more players on the PATCH side of the Pachtery’s platform, and it’s important to remember that these players aren’t buying any of the content on Amazon’s site.
“The PATCH team has been actively working with the developers of the original PATCH games to make sure we are in full compliance with the terms and conditions of the Amazon Marketplace,” said Pachuter.
Amazon.com’s online video service is still one of the best ways to get your hands on some new shows and movies, said Sam Sommers, vice president of digital media at Disney-owned ESPN.com.
“If you want to watch shows and games on Netflix, you can,” he said.
Disney has a strong presence on Netflix’s platform and recently introduced a new subscription service for those who want to enjoy Disney movies and TV shows for free.
