Two people were killed and five others injured after a mob attacked an elderly man and a woman in the south-western state of Maharashtra on Saturday night, officials said.
The incident occurred around 5.15pm (local time) in Kalbheda village, about 150 kilometres (90 miles) north-east of Mumbai, when two men were killed, police said in a statement.
Police later said the elderly man had died in the attack.
“The victim had been walking towards the police station, and was approached by a group of men who attacked him.
He succumbed to his injuries,” said Inspector-General of Police (IGP) (South) Raghavendra Singh.
An 18-year-old woman was also injured in the incident.
Police did not say what the motive behind the attack was.
The man’s wife and his three-year old son were also taken to hospital for treatment.
